Byomkesh Bakshi, the TRUTH seeker



I might not have heard the name of Shylock Holmes but I did hear the name Byomkesh Bakshi when I was a boy. Thanks to the availability of Indian television at the CHPC colony in the 90’s. No choices were there as the only channel that was available was doordarshan. That’s how I came to hear about Byomkesh Bakshi. Five months ago, while surfing through some articles I came through Byomkesh Bakshi’s episodes in one of the blog. And while going through it, I could find it linked to youtube. If you are interested in detective stories, then you might find out this blog pretty useful.

Byomkesh Bakshi is a fictional detective of the Bengali literature created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The advocate-turned author Bandyopadhyay wrote 33 stories featuring Byomkesh one of which was incomplete due to his death and most of the stories are centered in Calcutta. The stories of Byomkesh Bakshi, the truth seeker was aired in the national television doordarshan in the year 1993 and 1997 in two seasons. Actor Rajit Kapur played the role of Byomkesh Bakshi and the series has 33 episodes.

Episode 1 Satyanveshi

Byomkesh Bakshi finds out that the Police Commissioner is frustrated with the killings going on at the china town in Calcutta and offers his help. He says that it’s his first case and there is something called the beginners luck. He roams around the Calcutta town and decides to stay in a lodge where he meets with Ajit, a writer. He introduces himself as Manoj Kumar and is looking for lodging and job. Is source of the crime in the lodge? Will Byomkesh solve the case? Or will he fail in his first case?
